Gateway - Key Contributor to Sri Lankan Athletics
Four athletes selected to the National Squad
Building on the recent success in Swimming, where 5 Gateway swimmers made it to the National Squad of 22 to represent the country at the Asian Age Group Championship, 4 athletes of Gateway have just been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Junior SAF Games. They are Shelinda Jansen who broke a 32 year old record in 200 metres at the recently concluded Junior Nationals, Sadeepa Henderson, Sharmila Jan and Randi Cooray.
Junior National Championship
At the Junior National Championship held last week, several Gateway athletes performed exceptionally well. They included Dinara Bandara (Under 16 Girls 100m – 1 st ), Malindu Bethmage (Under 16 Boys Triple Jump – 2 nd ), Shelinda Jansen (Under 18 Girls 200m – 1 st with New Sri Lankan Record and 100m – 1 st ), Sadeepa Henderson (Under 18 Girls Long Jump – 2 nd 100m – 3 rd and 200m – 3 rd ), Randi Cooray (Under 20 Girls Triple Jump - 1 st and High Jump 3 rd ), Sharmila Jan (Under 20 Girls 100M – 2 nd and 200M– 2 nd ) and Chenuka Kasthuriarachchi (Under 20 Boys High Jump – 2 nd ).
Borella Divisional Championship
At this meet, competing with many State and Private Schools, Gateway emerged 2 nd in the Girls category and 4 th in the Boys category. Gateway’s Randi Cooray was adjudged the Best Female Athlete of the meet. She and Venura De Alwis became the Champion Athletes of their respective age groups.
In Under 12 Girls, Anuki Ramanayake came 1 st in High Jump and Damsini Wijebandara emerged 2 nd in Long Jump. The 4X50 Relay team that also included Nehansa Paranaliyanage and Sanuki Madapatha came 2 nd . In Under 14 Girls, Rukshala Wijesinghe (Long Jump – 1 st ), Sithuli Saparamadu (High Jump – 1 st ) and Nishenya Fernando (High Jump – 3 rd ) performed well for Gateway. In Under 14 Boys, Venura De Alwis (80m – 1 st , 100m – 1 st and Long Jump – 1 st ) and Minuka De Silva (Long Jump – 2 nd ) were the best performers. In Under 16 Girls, Maleeka Amith (800m – 1 st ) and Dehali Seneviratne (Shot Put – 1 st and Discuss Throw – 1 st ) excelled while in Under 16 Boys, Ranuka Senanayake (100m – 1 st and 200m – 2 nd ) and Malindu Bethmage (Long Jump – 2 nd and 100m Hurdles – 3 rd ) starred for the school.
Among the Seniors, in Under 18 Girls, Shelinda Jansen (100m – 1 st and 200m – 1 st ), Filzah Farouk (400m – 1 st 800m – 1 st and 200m – 3 rd ), and Aneesha Perera (100m Hurdles – 3 rd and Triple Jump – 3 rd ) excelled for Gateway. The 4X100 Relay team that also included Thanugi Wanniarachchi came 1 st . In Under 18 Boys, Iqram Iqbal (110m Hurdles – 2 nd ) and Binitha Chandrasena (High Jump – 2 nd ) did well for the school. In Under 20 Girls, Randi Cooray (100m Hurdles – 1 st , Triple Jump – 1 st and High Jump – 1 st ) and Natalie Malpana (200m – 1 st and 100m – 2 nd ) performed very well. The 4X100 and 4X400 Relay teams that also included Sharmila Jan and Sajali Hettiarachchi came 1 st in both events. In Under 20 Boys, Chenuka Kasthuriarachchi (High Jump – 1 st ) and Udesh Ranasinghe (Triple Jump – 2 nd ) brought honour to the school.
International Schools Athletics Championship
The athletes of Gateway College displayed their prowess at the 18 th International Schools Athletics Championship by performing exceptionally well in their respective events. At this premier event, the contingent of Gateway College proved their supremacy by securing 22 Gold Medals, 18 Silver Medals, 25 Bronze Medals. Gateway athletes also won the most prestigious awards at the meet, namely the ‘Best Performer’ (Randi Cooray), the ‘Best Male Athlete’ (Chenuka Kasthuriarachchi) and the ‘Best Female Athlete’ (Randi Cooray).
Five Age Group Championships were won by Gateway’s Venura De Alwis (Under 14 Boys), Sadeepa Henderson (Under 18 Girls), Sharmila Jan and Randi Cooray (Under 20 Girls’ Joint Champions) and Udesh Ranasinghe (Under 20 Boys). Among the other top achievers of Gateway were Binitha Chandrasena who won his 10 th consecutive gold medal at ISAC in High Jump. Minuka De Silva, Shazeen Shaheen, Shelinda Jansen, Filzah Farouk and Ishini Yatigammana were the other gold medalists of Gateway. Four relay teams of Gateway also won gold medals – Under 16 Boys 4x100m, Under 18 Girls 4x100m & 4x400m, Under 20 Girls 4x100m.
